Eastern Suffolk BOCES is seeking a full time School Health & Safety Compliance Officer, Suffolk County civil service title “Safety Officer”. This is an itinerant (mobile) position in which the employee would generally report to a single different school district each day of the week within Suffolk County, New York as part of a Shared Services Agreement with the local District & BOCES. The Safety Officer will be responsible to help the local School District with Health & Safety related compliance including; OSHA/PESH, EPA, NYS DEC, DOH and SED (State Education Department) requirements.
The Safety Officer would prepare, and update associated safety and compliance plans (HazCom, Bloodborne Pathogen, Fire Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, etc.). They may also assist the school district with visual observations; walk‑throughs and inspections regarding fire code and building safety, UST Programs, chemical inventories and hazardous waste (chemicals/disinfectants) disposal procedures. The Safety Officer would be available to the School to provide required and requested OSHA/PESH compliance training generally for custodial, maintenance, science and nursing staff including; Haz‑Com/Right to Know, Bloodborne Pathogens, Asbestos, Lead, Fire Safety, Electrical Safety & Lockout/Tagout, Ladder Safety, Slip‑Trip‑Fall Prevention, Integrated Pest Management, Confined Space, Respiratory Protection and Personal Protective Equipment among others. Safety Officer will also be available to the local district to provide support, guidance or research on particular safety or compliance issues that come up throughout the year typically coordinated with school Facilities Director, Custodial Supervisor, Plant Facilities Administrator and Custodians. Safety Officer shall coordinate and accompany Fire Marshal, Insurance Inspectors, Playground Inspectors, Department of Health/Labor Inspectors, PESH Inspectors while they conduct school assessments.
Job follows school administrative schedule for holidays, reduced summer hours, and is UPSEU union position, civil service, eligible for NYS retirement system, full benefit package, etc.

Requirements
(A) Applicant must be eligible to take the Suffolk County Safety Officer Civil Service examination which has prerequisites and experience requirements listed below.
CIVIL SERVICE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
(a) Graduation from a college with federally authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree*, and two (2) years of experience in the development or implementation of employee safety or accident prevention programs.
(b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6) years of experience in the development or implementation of employee safety or accident prevention programs.
(B) Applicant must have valid driver’s license and be capable of driving in Suffolk County, New York.
(C) Physical ability to walk throughout school buildings (basements, public areas, roofs), climb steps and ladders.
(D) Must be self‑motivated, self‑started, trustworthy, capable of following Agency and District Policies and Procedures.
